The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall of a pet food product called Sportmix manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods because it is believed to contain potentially fatal levels of aflatoxin. This recall follows the death of at least 28 dogs. Aflatoxin is produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus which can grow on corn and other grains used in pet food. The unfortunate incident highlights the need for pet food grade products to be certified to ensure safety standards are met, adding a premium to the market price. The higher market price of pet food grade poultry by product, as opposed to animal feed grade, reflects exactly this premium.
